COMPREHENSIVE BEHAVIORAL MANAGEMENT IN THE
ELDERLY

60-90 minute breakout session/All levels

This presentation will provide a review of the common causes of
delirium and behavioral problems in the elderly. It will focus on a multi-
faceted, interdisciplinary approach to handling behavior problems in
multiple settings. The use of psychotropic medications, environmental
changes, redirection, validation, person centered care and
caregiver/staff education will be discussed. Examples of best practices
in long-term care, assisted living and home care will be included.

Objectives:

At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

1. Discuss the common causes of delirium and behavioral changes in
the elderly.
2. Discuss the common psychotropic treatments for behavior
management.
3. Discuss three environmental changes that should be included in
behavioral management plans.
4. Demonstrate the concepts of redirection and validation.
5. Describe person-centered care and  3 interventions based on this
model of care.
6. Apply best practices in their personal practice setting.
