International statistics illustrate that between 2010 and 2020 the elderly population and those with dementia will increase significantly in developed countries (Australia, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Japan, The Netherlands, Scandinavia, The UK and the USA). The burden of caregiving is immense and innovative techniques need to be developed to support caregivers in their role. This presentation will provide an overview of current techniques that are being tested and researched. These include: specific family interventions, psycho-educational strategies, in-home interventions, primary care partnering, technological advances and issues related to diverse populations. Focus will be on the role of nursing in implementing and advocating these strategies. The presentation will include an in-depth discussion of family therapy, the REACH Program, the EPS Program (environmental skill building), IFEI (Individualized family education intervention and TLC (telephonic linked care). An overview of new technologies for monitoring, medication administration and self care will be included. At the completion of this presentation, the attendee will be able to understand the needs of elder caregivers, identify a primary intervention in each category, and implement strategies in their own practice. A detailed reference list will be available for participants.
