Cultural and Religious Factors Affecting Response to
Healthcare
Nanette Lavoie-Vaughan, M.S.N., APN
Course Description:

Today’s multi-cultural society provides an opportunity for the
nurse practitioner to interact with patients from diverse cultural
and spiritual backgrounds. A rudimentary understanding of the
cultural and spiritual values is an essential skill for today’s
practice. Cultural and spiritual values affect a person’s access
and response to health care, communication with providers,
compliance with treatment and decisions about end of life care.
This program will provide an overview of common cultural and
religious values and the meaning that these values bring to
healthcare. A discussion of potential actions that may be value
based will facilitate a broader understanding of how to effectively
communicate and improve compliance within a diverse
population.
