CPG Implementation
Nanette Lavoie-Vaughan, M.S.N., APN
Why use CPGs?
The survey process has changed dramatically starting in 2009. Survey teams will
be focusing on quality care initiatives and facilities will be assigned a rating
based on the findings. Consumers are demanding better care for the elderly and
will be relying on the rating system to help choose a nursing facility for their
loved one.

What are CPGs?
Clinical practice guidelines are tools developed by experts in the field of
Geriatrics and long-term care. They are designed to assist facilities in
implementing policies and procedures to improve resident care and maintain an
exemplary Quality Improvement program

Do you need a facilitator?
The tasks related to implementing CPGs are varied and lengthy. Most DONs and
administrative staff have little time left in the day for additional tasks. An
independent facilitator can ease the burden by performing these tasks,
generating reports and serving as a non-biased liaison for the staff.

care and is serves as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies, long-term

How long does implementation take to complete?
There are 3 phases to CPG implementation: first, an assessment to determine
the needs of the facility and choose the CPGs to be implemented; second, the
preparation for implementation that includes staff interviews, training sessions,
development of tools, forms and policies, and establishing goals and timeline; ad
third, the launch of CPG with evaluation of the results, preparation of reports and
finalization of QI program. The assessment can usually be completed in 1 full day
and the remaining process takes several weeks to several months depending on
the facility and the complexity of the project.

What is the cost for CPG implementation?
There are several options available: Assessment only (facility uses results to
perform their own implementation); Assessment and Training of staff (facility
does all tasks and uses facilitator for training classes for all staff on all shifts);
and complete implementation to include all 3 phases of the process. On an
individual basis, consulting is available for assist with any part of the process for
those facilities only purchasing assessment and training services. (See fee list
for details.)

What are the benefits of using a CPG Implementation Facilitator?
Prevents disruption of administrative staff’s and consultant’s normal duties,
allows staff to communicate honestly and openly with a neutral third party, and
provides you with a comprehensive program that will improve quality of resident
care, staff buy-in and satisfaction, family satisfaction and survey results.
